Marijuana, evil drug? or possibly nature’s remedy?
Like most things of this nature, there are two sides to the coin.
One side is that medical ‘pot’ has a lot of good things going for it, and even recreational use has few negative side effects. People using Medical Marijuana, or MMJ as some call it, have found themselves relieved of many symptoms and illnesses.
On the other face of the coin, you have the few negative side effects, people get ‘too relaxed’ or they become unable to tell hallucination from reality. This is the effect of THC the primary chemical in ‘pot’ which is a ‘psychodelic’ chemical that can cause ‘visions’ and other symptoms similar to Schizophrenic Psychosis.
However, there are other chemicals marijuana that relieve pain, reduce psychotic symptoms in people with SZ and Bi Polar, and has even been shown to have an effect on ADHD and ADD, these chemicals are called cannabidiol (CBD), cannabinol (CBN), both of which have been shown to have effects on the parts of the brain responsible for hallucinations, reducing or even stopping them all together.
CBD and CBN have also been shown to have effects on cancerous cells and certain other diseases. Concentrated CBs can even stop Seizures if given in high enough doses. They can also calm young children with severe disabilities such as low spectrum Autism and Palsies of various kinds.
Now that is not to say it is miracle drug, since if it was you could pluck it right off the stem, eat or smoke it, and get these amazing results, you have to process out the THC or things will just get worse. There are strains of the plant without the THC or at least very low amounts. Also smoking it burns off the CBs and reduces their effects, so ingestion is really the way to go.
I’m not going to say it should be cleared for recreational use, although the government could tax that like it does cigarettes and get HUGE returns. I will say that more research needs to be done on these miracle chemicals called Cannabinoids, found only in Cannabis plants, that seem to have all these amazing results.
So I leave it up to you, is ‘pot’ a miracle drug? or should it continue to be banned based on a false claim of it causing psychotic behavior. (and yes it was a false claim, it was the end of prohibition and the DEA needed something to justify its existence, and at the time things like Cocaine and Meth either did not exist or were not a serious issue)
